[DCRM-L] Fore-edge painting

Fore-edge paintings should be treated as copy-specific information. At my library, we put binding descriptions in a 590 note, but follow whatever copy-specific note convention your library uses. You can also use genre terms for fore-edge paintings (I think another responder mentioned AAT and RBMSCV terms) - we put those in a 655 field with a $5 for our institution code to indicate that that genre term only applies to our copy.

Hope this helps!

Hello,
I also get excited by fore-edge paintings on rare books. It is my understanding, though I am still kind of a newbie in regards to rare book cataloging, that some of the copies may not have the painting. So the catalogers who used that record may have copies without painting. If this is the case, then you should put that aspect in a local note. I could be wrong though. Good luck!

This must be my DCRM-B day!

I also have on my desk a book that has a fore-edge painting. (So exciting!)

The catalog record does not reflect this. Is there a special field to put that, or do you normally just use a 500 general note?
500 Includes fore-edge painting.

Kind regards,
Julie Moore
