Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the Recommendations for the Creation of Harmful Metadata and/or Harmful Language Statements, created by the DEI Steering Group of the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee, have now been published. The document is available here<https://hdl.handle.net/11213/23864> in the ALA Institutional repository, and also on the Bib Standards landing page<https://rbms.info/committees/bibliographic_standards/>.

>From the introduction:
Many cultural heritage institutions across the world have created statements addressing harmful metadata and/or harmful language in their catalog, collections, and other areas under their jurisdiction. These statements seek to alert patrons to the presence of potentially harmful language in catalog records and/or collection materials, provide context regarding why this language may be present, and outline what steps institutions are taking to remove or remediate harmful language created by the institutions themselves. This working group examined nearly 50 publicly-viewable statements from libraries, archives, and museums in the United States, Canada, and Australia to find commonalities and differences between them.
This document contains suggestions and best practices for institutions wishing to create their own harmful metadata statements. While each institution will need to craft a statement that reflects its collections and holdings, as well as its internal structure and metadata capabilities, the guidelines suggested here can help writers determine what information to include in the statement and how it should be structured.

All best,
Zoe Dobbs and Amy Tims
Co-chairs, RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee
